Big Hats...Southern Belles & The Kentucky Derby

It's something about a big hat that reminds me of the Kentucky Derby.  I did a little bit of research and found out that the Kentucky Derby (founded by Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr.) modeled the race after European-style racing events like the Royal Ascot, which mandated full morning dress for men and hats for women. When the Kentucky Derby began in 1875, both American and British women alike wanted to wear their finest to the races.  Although a big hat is not mandatory at the races today, it definitely is a repersentation of a traditional Southern Belle.  Straw hats were the style of choice for Southen Belle's back then.

Styling Tip
Here are a few points to keep in mind when selecting a hat:
  • Short figures should keep hats delicate rather than overly large, because the overly large hat will depleat the height you have. A hat with a tall crown will also give the illusion of extra height. A lighter color will have the effect of making you look taller.
  • Full figured women should to go for wide brims, to balance out their silhouette.
  • Be careful not to let other accessories compete.
  • The shape of your face is a factor that comes into play, but rather then give a list of do's and don'ts, it is better to try on the hat and remember finding the right hat is about the LOOK - how it looks and feels on you and it's about BALANCE and FIT - does the hat compliment the shape of your face.  Take your might need a few tries to find the right balance and fit.
